At Austin Kink Weekend (AKW), our titleholders are more than just the faces of a contest; they are the living heartbeat of our community. Whether it is a Leather or Bootblack title, each sash represents a commitment to service, leadership, and the preservation of a shared culture centered on the "soul of our community"—the internal drive to connect, protect, and mentor others.

A titleholder is an ambassador who represents the Texas community on local, statewide, and international stages. They are the stewards of our values, ensuring that integrity, inclusion, and charitable service remain at the forefront of the attendee experience.

The Pillars of the Texas Titles

While each contest has its own unique traditions and technical requirements, they all share a core mission: to foster visibility and connection within the LGBTQ+ and kink communities.

Mr. Texas Leather: Charisma and Community

The Mr. Texas Leather title emphasizes confidence and a leather aesthetic that reflects the individual's persona. Beyond technical presentation, the titleholder is expected to be a visible presence and serves as a representative at the International Mister Leather contest in Chicago.

Ms. Texas Leather: Narrative and Power

The Ms. Texas Leather title often highlights the art of storytelling and creative expression through the Fantasy Scene, a 200-point category where contestants use the entire stage to perform a narrative-driven scene. This titleholder embodies strength and presence, representing the community at the International Ms. Leather contest.

Mx. Texas Leather: Versatility and Expansion

The Mx. Texas Leather title is designed for gender-neutral and expansive expression, offering contestants the choice between a Fantasy Performance or Sexy Wear during the stage portion. This path ensures that every person in the community has a platform that reflects their specific identity and leather journey.

Texas Bootblack: Technical Mastery and Service

The Texas Bootblack title is, at its core, a skills-based competition. This role focuses on the technical "know-how" of leather maintenance and the hospitality of the bootblack stand. It is a rigorous path that requires a high degree of passion and technical proficiency, including:

  • Tech Boot Restoration: A 45-minute live restoration of a provided boot.

  • Stand Time: Evaluation based on speed, finished product, and how the contestant addresses specific technical challenges while interacting with the public.

  • A High Standard: To win, a contestant must reach a minimum threshold of 630 points in the Technical Skills category.

Shared Expectations of Our People

Holding a Texas title is a year-long journey of active engagement. All titleholders commit to:

  • Visibility: Making a minimum of six public appearances at leather, fetish, or LGBTQ+ events across Texas.

  • Philanthropy: Organizing at least one charitable event or fundraiser to benefit organizations within the community.

  • Mentorship: Attending and assisting with the next Austin Kink Weekend to guide the incoming class of contestants.

  • Representation: Attending respective international contests (IML, IMSL, or ICBB) as the representative of the Texas community.

The Path to the Sash

The selection process is designed to find leaders who are composed, knowledgeable, and relatable.

  • The Interview: A deep dive into community knowledge, personal history, and vision (200-300 points).

  • The Speech: A 90-second opportunity to motivate the audience and share a personal passion (100-225 points) .

  • Lifestyle & Public Image: An ongoing evaluation of how a contestant interacts professionally with attendees, guests, and volunteers throughout the weekend.

Whether they are polishing boots or delivering a keynote, our titleholders move the community forward by leading with heart and integrity.
