Why staying on site is the actual recommendation
Every class, every contest, the Gear Market, and every party happen in this building. Staying here means you are never driving after a late night, never timing a rideshare around a session you want to catch, and never deciding between the last hour of a party and getting home.
The lobby bar is the part nobody puts on a schedule and everybody remembers. It turns into the weekend's living room, and a lot of what people come back for happens there rather than in a programmed room.
Practical details. The Holiday Inn is a full-service IHG property: lobby bar and bistro, fitness center, free parking, and about 15,000 square feet of event space across several meeting rooms, which is what lets the whole weekend fit under one roof.
A note on discretion
The hotel is a working hotel with guests who are not here for AKW, which is why the dress code in public areas exists and why toys travel in a bag between rooms. Full detail is on First Time at AKW; the short version is that the lobby is a shared space and the event runs well because people treat it as one.

Candlewood Suites Austin North

Baymont by Wyndham Austin University Area
5812 N Interstate Hwy 35, Austin, TX 78751, about ten minutes from the venue. Straightforward rooms, free parking, and an easy highway run back to the Holiday Inn.
The hotel sits right off US-290 and I-35, two of Austin's main corridors. From I-35 in either direction, take the US 290 East / Airport Blvd exit and head north on Middle Fiskville Road.
Lyft and Uber both run throughout Austin. If you are staying at one of the alternatives, plan ahead for late-night pickups after Saturday, when demand spikes around bar close and waits get long.
